Le Bajo is Potato Head's latest venture in Labuan Bajo, a stunning picturesque little port on the island of Flores, Indonesia. Domestic and tourist locals use this as a base to see the world-famous, dangerously famous komodo dragons and access the pristine, coral reach water of Eastern Indonesia.
Similarly to Bali's Potato Head and Katamama, Le Bajo resort is to have an in-house boutique collection. I crafted several illustration artworks to be incorporated into the resortwear collection as patterns or graphics.
Drawing inspirations from my unforgettable scubadiving journey in Labuan Bajo's water, this is the first concept I proposed for the illustrations.
I have always been fascinated with chromolithography, a unique method for making multi-colour prints from the 19th century. So I dug up my collection of underwater chromolithograph images of underwater animals and selected the species commonly found in Bajo (seahorse, swordfish and sunfish). Later, I used Photoshop and Illustrator to enhance the features of these species.
The second concept is inspired from the land, specifically Padar, an island in the Komodo archipelago. ALL travelers who find themselves in this corner of the earth will almost always have their photo taken with this iconic coastline in the background.
So I traced the image of this coastline, before water colouring or digitally enhance it to play with texture, line and colour.
The third concept is the beach life. I used water colour to illustrate the beach scene.
The last concept draws inspirations from oil still-life painting. Using water colour, I stage the scene of still-life assemblage of local tropical fruits, such as pineapple, coconut, rambutan, mangosteen and the holy-grail-of-fruit, durian.
